Reduces Malpractice Exposure

Having a maternity service without a NICU is like walking a tightrope without a safety net. Despite the best obstetric care and efforts to limit high risk obstetric procedures, there are a fixed proportion of deliveries that will lead to situations where immediate life-saving neonatal intervention will be needed.

Our presence will improve emergency management thereby limiting nurse liability and reducing the overall hospital malpractice exposure leading to lower malpractice premiums.

Increase Special Care Nursery Census

Hospitals with Special Care Nurseries typically have a census between zero and six babies. Therefore, every admission makes a difference. Our higher level of in-house newborn care with providers dedicated to keeping as many babies as medically-indicated, will decrease Level 3 transfer rates.

Furthermore, through our weekly interactions with the Level 3 NICUs, we will make sure that babies born at community hospitals will be retro-transferred back for the feeding and growing stage of their hospitalization which can often last for weeks.

Lastly, through the marketing of the service, we will increase your overall maternity rates by targeting families that otherwise may have traveled to nearby cities or may have chosen to have their baby at another local hospital.

Partnering With Local Physicians

Firstday’s remote neonatologists and physician leaders will make regularly scheduled site visits toprovide analyses of outcome data at hospital meetings.

This will enable us to demonstrate how we are impacting the quality of care and at the same time, allow local providers to get to know the doctors behind the decision making. We are also available to visit individual provider offices to give presentations regarding trends in newborn care and to offer informal opportunities to interact with us.

Financial Viability

Providing Value. Increasing efficiency.

Improved quality and safety of patient care, enhanced support of staff physicians and reduced risk are the primary reasons hospitals choose Firstday Healthcare. But it’s also about the bottom line. Firstday diligently collaborates with hospital leaders to develop a program that decreases malpractice exposure while meeting or exceeding their individual goals and addressing their unique needs.

As a result, our partner hospitals enjoy a program that:

Reduces Nursing Turnover

Far too often, nurses are put in difficult situations where they have to make critical decisions for an unexpectedly ill newborn.

This level of stress and the liability exposure often leads to high turnover rates.

The reassurance that Firstday is there in the time of need for nurses to escalate concerns will lead to and improved nursing recruitment/retention.
